Message from President Michael DeMarco
Brothers and Sisters:
Over the years our jobs have changed. Pay is a real issue. To keep pace with technology, Traffic Device Maintainers have learned new skills. It is time for the city to recognize our advancements and increase our wages.
PAY EQUITY: Traffic Device Maintainers install and maintain munimeters. These machines are basically the same as Metrocard machines. Be assured the Local 1455 leadership team is fighting for a wage increase for TDMs to match the pay of Revenue Equipment Maintainers. We believe equal wages for equal work. The Dept. of Transportation is losing TDMs to similar job titles in other agencies that offer better pay. Although we are not covered by prevailing wage protection, I am fighting for salary increases to match the new skills required to do our jobs.
CONTRACTING IN: Local 1455 has saved the city millions of dollars each year by contracting signage work and other jobs, in addition to gainsharing for meeting production goals. We want a piece of the pie, a greater share of the savings. It’s time to show us the money.
Again, because we are not a prevailing rate local, we are challenged to get members the pay they deserve. It will be a long fight, the devil is in the details, but you have my assurance I have this issue in my sites and together we will get it done.
LABOR RELATIONS: We are meeting with the Mayor’s Office of Labor Relations to expand gainsharing and work incentives. We have a good working relationship with Commissioner Polly Trottenberg who is supportive of our issues.
For the 12th year, Local 1455 has partnered with DOT on National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week and Mayor Bill deBlasio’s Vision Zero program to protect workers and motorists as we repair roads and highways.
NO CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION: November’s election ballot will have a question on constitutional convention. Please vote NO. A constitutional convention would jeopardize our pensions, worker’s compensation, collective bargaining and competitive civil service exams and open the door to possible reductions in public services and pension benefits. A convention would cost taxpayers $300 million. For more information visit www.dc37.net.
We have to thank Executive Director Henry Garrido, Director of Research and Negotiations David Paskin and Blue Collar Division Director David Catala, as well as Mayor Bill de Blasio, Labor Commissioner Robert Linn, and Commissioner Trottenberg for their successful efforts thus far.
We continue to improve relations with management to insure that all workers are treated with dignity and respect.
Each of you have placed your confidence and trust in me and I am very honored and grateful for that. As your president I can say with confidence the newly elected executive board and I will continue to work hard on your behalf. The Local 1455 board includes Vice President Bobby Spiro, Treasurer Yasmine Garcia, Secretary Tony Jones, and executive board members Bobby Bixler, David Misla and Greg Redman.
